UCF has problems with the transfer portal but it isn't as bad as some Big 12 programs

The Knights have lost a lot of players to the transfer portal so far, but not as many as other Big 12 schools.

It seems like the Transfer Portal is already becoming more and more of a problem in college sports, especially college football. Many schools are seeing a mass exodus of players from their program, UCF being one victim of the loose rules the portal offers.

Scott Frost is already losing 23 players to the portal once it officially opens on Friday, January 2. There are quite a few big names heading to the portal that Frost will have to replace, but the good news is that he has a recruiting class coming in that is all his own guys.

While UCF is struggling with players leaving for the portal, it could be worse. There are some programs in the Big 12 being hit just as hard by the portal, and honestly, even worse. Some schools, like Iowa State and Oklahoma State, that have had head coaching changes so far have lost the most players to the portal out of all of college football.

Iowa State so far has lost 47 players to the portal, but Oklahoma State isn't too far behind with 45 players planning to leave. Two other Big 12 teams are on the list below, and that is West Virginia and Colorado, two programs that didn't have any coaching changes this season.

For UCF, 23 players are a lot, but right now, the Cyclones and the Cowboys are clearly hurting even more. UCF is also close with fellow in-state schools Florida State and the Florida Gators, who just hired Tulane's Jon Sumrall, a coach UCF is very familiar with.

Every UCF player planning to enter the transfer portal

UCF will have some guys still in the building after the transfer portal opens, but here is the list of the 23 players who are planning to enter as of the time this article was written.

  • LB Kam Moore
  • S Jaylen Howard
  • S Jakob Gude
  • S Tony Williams
  • QB Tayven Jackson
  • TE Kylan Fox
  • CB Jyaire Brown
  • QB Jacurri Brown
  • IOL Jaquez Jioner
  • DL John Walker
  • LB Malakhi Boone
  • IOL Carter Miller
  • DL Derrick LeBlanc
  • DL Andrew Rumph
  • EDGE Jamaal Johnson
  • S Christian Peterson
  • WR Vredell Richardson
  • LB TJ Bullard
  • DL Rodney Lora
  • DL Tyreek'e Robinson
  • RB Stacy Gage
  • CB Ja'Cari Henderson
  • DL Horace Lockett

There are quite a few notable names that played big parts in Frost's first season back in Orlando, like quarterback Tayven Jackson and Jacurri Brown. The Knights have also lost a lot of guys on the defensive side of the ball, like John Walker and Ja'Cari Henderson, who were big contributors on this Knights defense that was one of the highlights of the season.

Frost certainly will have his work cut out for him this offseason rebuilding this roster, but again, he won't be the only head coach with that tough job.
