UCF men's basketball coach Johnny Dawkins just signed an extension to stick around UCF a little longer. The former Duke all-star just signed a contract to stick around at UCF through the 2026-2027 season.
Some probably thought Dawkins was going to be on the hot seat this season after a few rough seasons the past few years, but UCF just proved they are loyal to Dawkins and his coaching style.
In what is known as the toughest conference in college basketball, Dawkins exceeded expectations in UCF's first season in the Big 12. Even though the Knights didn't make the NCAA Tournament, they did get eight wins against conference opponents and received an invite to the NIT where they unfortunately lost to in0state rival USF in the first round.
UCF's biggest win was undoubtedly their Big 12 home opener against No. 3 Kansas, a blue blood in college basketball. the win came after a big storm the night before and legend has it that palm fronds from the palm tree were laying around campus and students decided to bring them into the game as a distraction for the Jayhawks.
Dawkins has coached at UCF since 2016 and has led the Knights to one NCAA Tournament and three NITs. He has a 148-102 record at UCF and an even 72-72 record in conference games. Dawkins has the second-highest win percentage in program history and the highest in the Knights's Division I era.
The latest accomplishment for Dawkins came this past offseason when he brought in five-star recruit Moustapha Thiam who chose to reclassify to join the Knights early.
