Get to know these 6 new college football rules ahead of the 2024 season
The 2024 college football season is officially starting in less than a month and even though some fans are getting their football fix from EA Sports College Football 25, they are ready for the real thing.
With a new college football season coming around, there are a lot of changes happening including new teams in new conferences, but everyone knows that. There will also be new rules this season that fans will want to read up on.
So before the season starts, make sure you read up about these six new rules coming to the field this season.
2-minute warnings
This is a rule taken straight from the NFL and college football will be implementing 2-minute warnings.
There will be an official timeout at the end of each half or at the end of the second adn fourth quarters once the clock hits 2 minutes left.
After the official timeout, the clock will run as normal until a first down is converted and all pre-snap penalties will result in a 10-second runoff when the clock is running.
In-helmet communications
This is another rule college football is pulling from the NFL. There will be one player on the field who will have an in-helmet communication that will allow coaches to speak to that player until there are 15 seconds left on the play clock or when the ball is snapped, whichever comes first.
The player that has "the mic" on the field will be identified with a green dot on the back of his helmet. The NCAA did some testing with this rule during a few of the 2023 bowl games and found it to have a lot of success.
Tablets for in-game video review
This is another rule from the NFL that college football will implement and it will be a more visible rule on the sideline.
Coaches and staff will have 18 tablets on each sideline that can be used to look at in-game footage to help players see what they are doing right and what they are doing wrong.
However, they will not have any access to any practice footage or any footage from past games.
Horse collar tackles in the tackle box will result in a 15-yard penalty
Horse collar tackles have always been a penalty in college football, but there is a little more clarity on them.
Now when an offensive player is tackled using a horse collar tackle in the tackle box, there will be a 15-yard penalty imposed and the defensive player will receive a personal foul.
Conference-wide video review system
There has always been video review in college football, but now it will hopefully be a little easier for officials. Now each conference will have its own video review system and can help an official confirm or reverse a call on the field.
Basically, now officials will not have to look at those tiny black screens all the way on the opposite side of the field.
Head coach interviews after 1st and 3rd quarters
In the past fans only get to hear from head coaching during the game before and after halftime, but now you will get to hear more.
Now on-field reporters will be able to talk with coaches at the end of the first and third quarters. Players however are still not going to be available during the game.
